B1 Employment in industry
Research into the Film Industry:
When looking at employment opportunities in media, I researched the film industry as this is the sector that I am most interested in. The film industry or motion picture industry comprises the technological and commercial institutions of film-making, i.e., film production companies, film studios, cinematography, animation, film production, screenwriting, pre-production, post production, film festivals, distribution and actors. The oldest national film industry is Hollywood and is also perhaps the most well known across the world. However, the first to present projected moving pictures to a paying audience were the Lumière brothers in December 1895 in Paris, France. They used a device of their own making, 'the Cinématographe', which was a camera, a projector and a film printer all in one. In 2020, China became the largest box office territory, overtaking North America in gross total. In addition to this, Indian cinema is the largest national film industry in terms of the number of films produced, with 2,446 feature films produced annually as of 2019. Film is a very highly regarded sector of the media industry. In 2019, the global box office was worth $42.2 billion and when including home entertainment revenue, the global film industry was worth $136 billion in 2018.
Relevant companies:
I wanted to search for job opportunities tailored to video editing in the film industry and in the UK, there are many relevant companies that specialise in film. An example of one of these companies is Panda Film Productions. Panda Film Productions is a leading British video production agency that is based in Yorkshire and was founded in 2008. Within the past 14 years, this company has worked with many well-established clients such as The BBC, British Gas, The NHS and Biffa. At this moment in time, Panda Film Productions are currently offering a job position as a full-time professional video editor: https://uk.linkedin.com/jobs/view/video-editor-at-panda-film-production-ltd-3047206991?utm_campaign=google_jobs_apply&utm_source=google_jobs_apply&utm_medium=organic
Another great example of a relevant company is LADbible. Founded in 2012, LADbible is one of the UK's most well recognized digital publishers. As well as having their headquarters based in Manchester, it also has offices in Sydney, Dublin, London, Melbourne and Auckland. LADbible is mostly geared towards young adults as they claim to reach two thirds of 18-34 year olds in the UK.
job roles in the Media Industry
There are an abundance of roles available in the Media Industry. A few examples are video editor, writer, producer, sound engineer, director, media researcher and radio broadcaster. Some of the biggest media employers in the UK are Apple, ITV, Virgin Media, Channel 4, SKY, BBC, Amazon Prime. Media is a particularly difficult industry to enter as employers have high standards and receive copious applications from highly skilled applicants.
Film/Video Editor
A Film/Video editor manages material such as camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and special effects to produce a final film or video product. This is a key role in the post-production process and skills used can determine the quality and delivery of the finished result. This role usually works closely with the director to achieve the end product. There are a variety of productions a film editor may work on from advertisements, feature films, television programmes to music videos. A degree in media production is not essential but proven skills in editing software packages are required as well as an excellent level of computer literacy.
TV/Film Runner
A TV/Film Runner is a general assistant who supports the production process by carrying out tasks for the producer and production team. It is an entry-level position and often the first step on the career ladder for people who wish to work in the Media Industry. Responsibilities vary widely from hiring props, arranging transport, administration work, organising equipment to helping set up location shoots and looking after guests. There are no specific qualifications but a relevant degree or other qualification in media may improve employment chances. It is a great way to gain experience in the industry and make contacts. It is also possible to apply for this role through an apprenticeship. I feel this would be an excellent opportunity to acquire experience and utilise my practical skills.
Digital & Social Media Apprentice
A Digital & Social Media Apprentice contributes to content for advertisements, brochures and social media posts. Responsibilities can include creating engaging website content to attract and interact with customers, using media software to keep track of performance and carrying out administrative duties. Experience is not expected but GCSE English and Maths is required along with knowledge of computer systems.
