B1 Constructing a Personal Statement

 UCAS Personal Statement:

The purpose of a UCAS Personal Statement is to give your employer a brief understanding of who you are. A personal statement may include things such as:

  • Your personality
  • your ambitions/goals
  • your experience
  • Your achievements
  • Your hobbies/interests
My Personal Statement:
I believe that film is a very important part of human culture, not only do films serve as entertainment, but they also have the ability to invoke powerful emotions and connect with the viewer on a personal level. Because of this, very few people can say that they have never been affected by a film in a lasting or meaningful way.

I am very interested in studying BA (Hons) in Media Production. I have always been drawn to film and TV from an early age and have grown to understand how powerful a medium it is, in reaching and provoking a reaction from the audience. The style and presentation of subject matter can be so powerful it can change the opinion of the viewer.

As a child I spent hours drawing cartoons, inventing characters and sketching story boards. My imagination was boundless. I thrived on creating pieces of art and bringing pen and paper to life. I developed a passion for photography and making films. I loved to record mini movies with action figures and scenery I crafted myself. I was not academically gifted, I struggled at school to concentrate on tasks, but realised the time I spent taking pictures and creating videos of personal interest passed very quickly.

My passion for film, photography and practical ability in the use of creative equipment, put me on the path to studying Creative Media. I am currently in my second year of study at Sunderland College. During my time at Sunderland College, I have been given the time to develop and display my technical skills on many occasions. The things that I have created include projects such as a series of print adverts which promote the idea of smiling in order to improve mental health, a documentary that covers the effects of the Digital Age on mental health, a promotional barbering video, a showreel, a website, a print advert for the company 'Greenpeace', a business card, a logo and a western-style short film.

My goal is to complete the course and find full time employment in a role where I can gain more experience and build a portfolio of work.

I was lucky to be placed within the Media department at Sunderland College to undertake school work experience. I gained an insight into the educational environment of a Creative Media course, experienced working to a teaching timetable and completing time-oriented tasks to deadline. I received training in the use of media equipment and enjoyed using creative software to produce a series of print advertisements. During this work experience, I was tasked with creating a series of promotional posters for a film of my choice, using Adobe Photoshop. The film that I chose to select was Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight', the second film of a very critically acclaimed trilogy. At the time, I was 15 years old and not extremely familiar with Adobe Photoshop but despite this, I was able to exceed my own expectations as well as my lecturer's and produce several outstanding pieces of print work.

I would embrace the opportunity to study Media Production and I see this as a pathway to a future career in Media.
