B1 Evaluation

B1 Personal Progression Evaluation:

Research into my Future Options:

Moving forward from college, I am very much interested in securing employment in a media related role. When I first began to research into available job roles in the media industry, I conducted a general internet search for media jobs in the UK and this primarily produced results of senior positions based in London and the surrounding areas. Because of this, I narrowed my internet search to Media jobs in the North East. www.totaljobs.com and www.reed.co.uk seemed to be quite popular websites. I viewed the job specifications but many of them required at least 1 year previous job experience and degree level qualifications. I did not find anything suitable however, it did give me a better idea of the different kind of roles that are available. Overall, https://uk.indeed.com provided the most relevant vacancies for my age and entry level. This made me feel that I would be best suited to an apprentice position. These are the roles that I have considered.

The skills and experience required for these roles include basic marketing material to promote the company, photo editing, graphics for social medias and logo design.

As well as employment, I also looked into Higher Education options and when doing so, I chose to research 3 separate universities. These universities consisted of Sunderland, Northumbria and Teeside. While looking into these universities, I found out that all 3 of them offered Creative Media courses that would assist me with the goal of working as an editor within the film industry. These courses all required a minimum of at least 3 Grade C GCSEs. This briefly caused me to reconsider the idea of university, however I eventually chose the the apprentice route instead. Despite this, I still found this knowledge reassuring.

Undertaking Networking Opportunities:

As a part of this unit, I was fortunate enough to be given several opportunities to receive knowledge and advice from some existing practitioners within the media industry. Two examples of these practitioners include David Longworth (BBC) and Sam Horton (a storyboard artist). Sam Horton's video call was extremely thought provoking and very insightful. He is a professional storyboard artist with over eight years of experience in the industry, who has provided boards for a range of CGI, stop motion and 2D animation projects across feature films, broadcast series and commercials. Sam accomplishes this as he is very familiar with software such as Photoshop, Storyboard Pro and Panel Forge. Because of this, Sam was a great person for myself to learn from. He showed myself and my class several short videos and animations that he had a role in creating such as 'The Epic Adventures of Morph' and 'Dennis and Gnasher Unleashed'. In addition to showing us the final products, he also showed us the initial storyboards of the animations and further explained the creation process. David Longworth is a 'Talent Schemes Manager' for the BBC therefore, making him a great source of information for media related content. He gave me great insight into how the recruitment and training process for a well-established media company such as the BBC operates and he even mentioned a newly opening role as a broadcast operator for a BBC apprenticeship in Newcastle. He then assigned our class with a new piece of content for the BBC and there were many great ideas shared.

As for my mock interview, I believe that I was alert and responsive to questions however, there was much room for improvement. I was unprepared and thus, unconfident and my body language heavily displayed this. I was clearly tense and had a somewhat slouched posture. My improvisation was effective and I was able to show my passion for media by rambling about some of my favorite films and tv shows. I believe that my mock interview has helped me to develop my communication skills by acting as experience. I am also able to analyse my mock interview from a third person perspective and understand how I can improve. Moving forward, I know that I require more practice and experience in an interview setting as well as more preparation prior to an interview.

Creating my brand Identity:

Creating a brand identity consisted of making a business card, logo, showreel, personal statement, cv and a website. These six tasks allowed me to practice and showcase my technical abilities perfectly, which is more than ideal for that of a video editor. Not only this, but they also assist me in establishing my online identity to perfection. My business card and logo both follow the colour scheme of black and white, a reoccurring theme in my brand's appearance. My card and logo have also both received heavy praise from my peers therefore, I know that they are very effective.

When creating my showreel, I sourced my most outstanding media projects and creations from the past 2 years and compiled all of them into a well-edited, short compilation. I then preceded to gather feedback on this showreel and reflect on said feedback. This gave me the awareness of my strengths as well as my flaws.

To conclude, I believe that I have made great progress in my personal development. I have received some amazing networking opportunities from successful practitioners of media and these opportunities have allowed me to improve my understanding of the media industry as a whole. Throughout this, my passion for media has only grown and my technical skills have also improved drastically. I now find myself to be way more confident and competent with various different editing software, as I am able to produce full pieces of high quality, well-edited work. I am now prepared and more eager than ever to enter the media industry, confident that I have the sufficient skills and mindset to do so. For my next step, I am going to apply to become an Apprentice Junior Content Producer as a believe that this job role will serve as the perfect stepping stone into the industry.
